A murder case has been filed naming 23 people in connection with the killing of Delwar Mridha (35) in Meghna upazila of Cumilla over a road construction dispute. The case was filed by the deceased’s elder brother Abdul Baten Mridha. It includes names of 15 accused and 8 unidentified individuals.
In the case, Md. Nasir Uddin has been made the main accused. He is known as the general secretary of the Chandanpur Union Jubo League and a Union Parishad member.
Police sources said that the deceased Delwar Mridha’s elder brother Abdul Baten Mridha is politically associated with Jamaat-e-Islami and serves as the Amir of Chalivanga Union Jamaat.
The complainant alleged that there had been a long-standing dispute over constructing a road through their land in Tulatuli village. He had requested that the road be built along one side instead of through the middle of the land. This allegedly angered Union Parishad member Nasir Uddin.
According to the complaint, on the night of May 9, Delwar Mridha was going from his old house to a new house when a group of attackers lying in ambush attacked him. He was critically injured and locals tried to rescue him, but he died on the spot.
Attempts to contact the accused Union Parishad member Nasir Uddin were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was found switched off.
Shahidul Islam said that a murder case has been recorded regarding Delwar’s killing. Police teams are working in the field to arrest those involved. He also said necessary legal action will be taken based on investigation.
It is noted that on the night of May 9, tension arose between two groups in Tulatuli village over road construction, which later turned into a clash. During the clash, Delwar Mridha was killed by sharp weapon injuries. Several others were injured, according to local sources.
