Additional Superintendent of Police of Dhaka District’s Savar Circle, Md. Asaduzzaman, stated that on Monday, Sabuj Sheikh was presented in court, and a statement was recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Afterward, he was sent to jail. Previously, police had sought a 10-day remand for him.
According to police, the homeless Sabuj roamed around the Savar Model Thana area, Upazila Health Complex, Sub-Registry Office, and the vicinity of the municipal community center for a long time. Investigations revealed that he chose secluded locations, took homeless men and women there, and committed murders under various pretexts. The latest incident, where a double murder occurred near the municipal community center and burnt bodies were recovered, caused public concern.
Police said that during preliminary questioning and court statements, the suspect gave different reasons for each murder, including unethical relationships and personal disputes. Therefore, the authenticity of these claims is being carefully verified.
There is also confusion regarding Sabuj Sheikh’s identity. He has sometimes introduced himself as ‘King Samrat’ and at other times under different names. Police say that his addresses and family information are being verified, and it has not yet been fully confirmed. His birthplace is reportedly Louhjong, Munshiganj, but this too is under verification.
Police records indicate six murders in Savar over the past seven months. Several of these occurred near the municipal community center, prompting enhanced CCTV and lighting in the area. Sabuj was arrested based on analysis of CCTV footage from the latest incident.
Authorities are also evaluating the suspect’s mental condition. Locals have reported unusual behavior over an extended period, although no one suspected he could be involved in multiple murders. Police investigations are ongoing based on confessions, evidence, and direct and indirect testimonies to determine the facts and motives behind the killings.
