July Movement Has United the Nation: Akhtar Hossain

Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of the National Citizens Party and Convenor of the ‘Democratic Student Force,’ said that during the July mass movement, strangers stood by each other and created a unique example of humanity. He remarked that the greatest achievement of the movement was how unknown people risked their lives to help those who were shot or injured.

In a recent interview with Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Akhtar Hossain said the 2018 quota reform movement was based on democratic and reasonable demands. The students did not want the quota system completely abolished but rather sought timely reforms. However, the government suddenly scrapped the entire quota system, which was later challenged in court and resulted in an adverse verdict.

He stated that after the court’s ruling, discussions were held with the leaders of the Democratic Student Force, and a decision was made to organize a united movement on campuses. To avoid political influence, he initially worked behind the scenes as an organizer.

Akhtar Hossain also said that from June onwards, efforts were made to involve universities nationwide in the movement. In July, with the spontaneous participation of students, the movement expanded. Initially, the processions reached Shahbagh overcoming obstacles posed by the student wing of the ruling party. Later, the movement spread from Farmgate to the Express Highway and to other universities across the country.

He noted that on the night of July 16, the students of Dhaka University themselves expelled the student league members from the dormitories, creating a ‘student league-free’ environment. As news of this success spread from one dormitory to another, students’ courage and enthusiasm grew.

According to Akhtar Hossain, the collective spirit of humanity and bravery in the July movement will have a positive impact on the political culture of the future.
