DNN Desk | Rangpur: The International Crimes Tribunal has granted a one-month extension for submitting the investigation report in the genocide-related murder case of Abu Saeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, who was killed during an anti-discrimination protest in Rangpur. The new deadline has been set for July 14, 2025.
A three-member bench, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuja Majumdar, granted the extension on Sunday. The bench also includes Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Court sources confirm that four accused individuals appeared before the tribunal today. They are:
Shariful Islam – former proctor, Begum Rokeya University
Amir Hossain – former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), police
Sujon Chandra Rai – constable
Imran Chowdhury alias Akash – student political leader
The tribunal permitted the interrogation of ASI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujon Chandra Rai, as well as Shariful Islam and Imran Chowdhury.
The incident occurred on August 18, 2024, when Abu Saeed sustained gunshot injuries from police during a protest. He later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital, triggering nationwide protests and condemnation from human rights organizations.
Following the tribunal’s order, Abu Saeed’s family and classmates have demanded swift justice and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. The nation awaits further developments as the legal process progresses.
