Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the interim government, has announced that preparations are underway to hold the 13th National Parliamentary Election in February 2026. A formal letter will soon be sent to the Chief Election Commissioner to ensure that the election is held before the start of Ramadan.
He made this statement during a nationally televised address at 8:20 PM on Tuesday. The speech was broadcast simultaneously on Bangladesh Television (BTV), BTV News, and Bangladesh Betar. The address coincided with the anniversary of last year’s mass uprising in July.
Dr. Yunus said, “The interim government had three main tasks—reform, establishment of justice, and organizing a credible election. We have already successfully completed two of these phases. Now lies ahead our most important and final responsibility—holding the election and transferring power.”
Earlier in the afternoon, he read the "July Declaration" at a program held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building. There, he affirmed the interim government’s commitment to laying the foundation for a sustainable and participatory democratic system.
In his speech, he added, “This election is not just an administrative process—it is a historic opportunity to reestablish democracy. We want the people to elect a representative government through the exercise of their voting rights.”
Political analysts view this announcement as a significant step forward for the country’s political future. They suggest that it may mark the end of prolonged political instability and pave the way for a return to democratic continuity.
The general public now shares one primary expectation—a free, fair, and inclusive election that ensures their right to determine the future leadership of the country.
