The National Citizens Party (NCP) has been unable to decide on forming a third political alliance. No clear decision emerged during the executive council meeting held Wednesday afternoon due to internal disputes within the party.
Sources within the party said many members opposed joining the new alliance, particularly expressing reluctance to join a potential alliance led by Awami Protirodh Bangladesh (AP Bangladesh). Most of the opposing members are followers of the two advisors in government, Asif Mahmud and Mahfuz Alam.
The meeting began at 5:30 pm and lasted for four hours, attended by the majority of the 51-member executive council. The party has long been divided over whether to join a third alliance. Sources said Asif Mahmud and Mahfuz Alam are preparing for the election from the BNP-led alliance.
Currently, discussions on a possible third alliance include NCP, Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), Bangladesh State Reform Movement, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), and Gan Adhikar Parishad.
NCP convener Nahid Islam and his followers want to participate in elections by forming a third alliance. However, another faction of the party, aligned with the two advisors and interested in the BNP alliance, opposes this proposal.
Meanwhile, Abdul Kader, VP candidate of Dhaka University’s Democratic Student Union and known as a follower of advisor Asif Mahmud, organized a prayer program for BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s health, supported by NCP student leaders. This student organization is influenced by the two advisors.
Due to internal disagreements and indecision regarding alliance formation, the NCP leaders’ scheduled press conference did not take place.
