Intense Competition for DU’s DUCSU and Hall Parliament Elections

The campus of Dhaka University is currently buzzing with electoral enthusiasm ahead of the DUCSU (Dhaka University Central Students' Union) and Hall Parliament elections. After the nomination submission period ended, signs of a fierce contest have emerged among various student organizations and independent candidates.

According to the Chief Returning Officer’s office, a record number of candidates have filed nominations for the 28 posts of the DUCSU central council this year. However, the competition is not uniform across all positions; the main focus is on the posts of Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), and Assistant General Secretary (AGS).

Speaking with students, it appears that the main contest for the top three posts could be among five panels: Bangladesh Nationalist Student Party (Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal), Anti-Discrimination Student Parliament, Protirodh Parishad (leftist coalition), Independent Student Unity, and United Student Alliance. Each organization has already gained recognition in discussions, and given their own vote banks, students believe the competition will be intense.

Meanwhile, the university halls have also become hubs of election-related activity. Even before formal campaigning begins, candidates are in touch with their supporters, making various promises. Discussions among students focus on candidates’ honesty, transparency, and active participation in movements. Those who were prominent during the July uprising are receiving particular attention.

However, some complaints have also surfaced. Certain candidates from a few panels reportedly violated the code of conduct by holding processions while submitting nominations. While opposition panels have criticized this, the university administration says all complaints are being reviewed and warnings issued if necessary.

Analysts believe it will be difficult for a single panel to win outright this year. Instead, voters are likely to prioritize candidates’ personal image, credibility, and active involvement in addressing student issues. Students themselves say they want leaders who will protect the genuine interests of the student body rather than revive the “ganorum–guestroom” culture.

Candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 25. The final list of candidates will be published on August 26, and voting is scheduled for September 9. Students hope that this year’s DUCSU election will be participatory, competitive, and fair.
