In a sensational revelation in Khulna, two daughters have leveled serious allegations against their father, Dr. Sheikh Baharul Alam, a prominent citizen leader, influential figure in Swachip, and President of the Khulna District unit of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA). To protect their family’s honor and break their long-standing silence, Sheikh Tamanna Alam, Managing Director of APC Pharmaceuticals Limited, held a press conference at the Khulna Press Club on Wednesday (8 October) at 11:30 a.m., accompanied by her younger sister, Dr. Tasnuva Alam.
In her written statement, Sheikh Tamanna Alam alleged that their mother, Dr. Shamsunnahar Milon, was deliberately murdered on 13 November 1989. At that time, Tamanna was 14 years old and her younger sister was only seven. Although the incident was long portrayed as a suicide, recent developments indicate it was in fact a homicide. The sisters filed a case at the Khulna court on 9 September (CR 1144/25).
Tamanna Alam further claimed that their father has long been involved in an illicit relationship with a married woman of a different religion named Hena Rani Bhowmik, and that a child was born from this relationship approximately 18 years ago. She said this revelation has caused significant moral and social shock to the family.
“My father’s immoral relationship has devastated our entire family. Our family has been broken around a married woman of a different religion. Yet he started as a mere employee earning 1,300 taka. Today, he is a company director, and our 50-year-old family business, APC Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is on the brink of destruction,” she said.
The sisters also alleged that, with Dr. Baharul Alam’s assistance, Hena Rani Bhowmik and her husband, Chitta Ranjan Sen, have been threatening and intimidating them in various ways. They claimed that verbal abuse has occurred in front of employees multiple times. Due to fear, they filed several general diaries at Sonadanga Police Station (GD No. 1402, 1567/2024 & 537/2025).
Financial misconduct was also highlighted during the press conference. Tamanna Alam stated that her father forged their signatures to sell a flat in Dhaka for 7 million taka and fraudulently took a bank loan of 3 million taka in their names. They have filed two separate cases regarding these incidents (Case No. 1330/25 & 1335/25).
Additionally, the sisters claimed that Dr. Baharul Alam misappropriated 4 million taka from Lubna Jahan, owner of Smart Agro BD, after violating a contract. They also alleged that 10,000 shares of APC Pharmaceuticals Ltd. were illegally transferred in Hena Rani’s name, which violates company law.
Tamanna Alam stated, “He repeatedly relied on fraud and misappropriation to cover up the murder of our mother and hide his immoral relationship. He even directly threatened me, saying that if I overstep, my fate will be like my mother’s.”
The sisters accused their father, who holds a senior position in BMA and serves as the Joint General Secretary of Khulna District Awami League, of using political influence to engage in the sale of positions, transfer trades, and embezzlement from various institutions. They also alleged that he is using his home and the BMA building to establish a so-called “Refined Awami League.”
Despite repeated attempts within family and social circles to resolve the matter, they claim the situation has worsened, with Hena Rani Bhowmik and her husband gaining more influence.
In response, Dr. Sheikh Baharul Alam denied all allegations in media interviews. He stated, “My wife committed suicide in 1989, which was confirmed by the police investigation. My daughters are behaving disorderly and spreading confusion. The company’s directors decided to remove Sheikh Tamanna Alam from the MD position.”
He further claimed, “I am well-known in this city. In 40 years, no one has made such allegations against me. My daughters’ statements are entirely false, and I have proof to refute each claim.”
At the end of the press conference, the two daughters expressed fear that due to their father’s influence and the unethical network around him, they could be at risk of attack, abduction, or even murder. They called for intervention from law enforcement, administration, and the journalist community.
Sheikh Tamanna Alam emphasized, “My intention is not to harm anyone’s personal life. I am here today out of responsibility to protect my family’s honor, dignity, and future. I seek justice.”
