According to a recent report by the Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association, a total of 568 people were killed and 1,411 injured in 554 accidents across roads, railways, and waterways during the month of July. This data was compiled by monitoring news reports from various media outlets nationwide.

Md. Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, General Secretary of the Association, stated in a press release that on roads alone, 506 accidents took place in July, causing 520 deaths and 1,356 injuries. On railways, 34 accidents led to 31 deaths and 41 injuries, while 14 accidents on waterways resulted in 17 deaths, 14 injuries, and 5 people missing.

The statement highlighted that damaged roads and highways caused by rainfall, especially potholes, have increased the number of accidents involving speeding vehicles. Therefore, the Association urged relevant authorities to urgently repair these roads and construct rain-resistant roads.

Motorcycle accidents have notably increased, with 162 motorcycle accidents in July causing 169 deaths and 144 injuries, accounting for about one-third of the total accidents. The high fatality rate among motorcyclists is also a significant concern.

Geographically, the highest number of road accidents occurred in the Dhaka division, where 122 accidents resulted in 130 deaths and 295 injuries. The lowest number of accidents took place in the Barisal division, with 23 accidents causing 23 deaths and 95 injuries.

The Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association has called on the government to take swift and effective measures to ensure the safety of the country’s road and transportation systems to reduce such fatal incidents in the future.
