Bright Future for Women’s Football in Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Under-20 Women’s Football Team has qualified for the main round of the AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup for the first time. After the qualifiers held in Laos, the team members returned home on Monday night to Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Under the coaching of Peter Butler, the team achieved this success through an impressive performance.

Team captain Afeeda Khandakar, welcoming the team at the airport, credited the collective efforts of everyone involved and the support of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) for their achievement. She said, “This success is the result of the entire team’s hard work and the invaluable contribution of the coaching staff and the federation.”

In the qualifiers, Bangladesh started strong by defeating hosts Laos 3-1 in the opening match. They further strengthened their position by beating East Timor 8-0 in the second match. Although they lost 6-1 to the strong South Korea team in the final match, they secured a spot in the main tournament as one of the best three runners-up.

The main tournament of the 12-team Asian Cup will be held in Thailand in April. Besides Bangladesh, participating teams include South Korea, India, Chinese Taipei, North Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, Uzbekistan, Jordan, China, and Japan.

However, the BFF did not hold any reception to honor the team at the airport, which has caused concern among the players and supporters. Still, the players remain optimistic that their future successes will receive greater recognition from the country’s top football authorities.

Bangladesh women's football is currently on a path of continuous success. Recently, the senior national women’s team also qualified for the Asian Cup main round. Now, under Butler’s coaching, the Under-20 team has continued this success, which is expected to set a new benchmark for football development in the country.
