Legendary sports icon Abdus Sadeq passes away

A bright star of Bangladesh’s sporting history has passed away. Legendary athlete Abdus Sadeq, who made outstanding contributions to both hockey and football, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital on Saturday morning after a long illness. His death has cast deep mourning over the country’s sports community.

Abdus Sadeq was considered one of the rare talents in Bangladesh’s sporting history, excelling at the highest level in both football and hockey. His greatest recognition came from hockey, where he is regarded as one of the country’s finest players.

His passion for sports began during his school life at Armanitola School. Later, he established himself in both football and hockey. In the 1960s, he regularly played in Dhaka’s football league representing top clubs. After independence, he also served as the first captain of Abahani Krira Chakra football team.

However, he achieved the most prominence in hockey. He captained several dominant domestic hockey teams and was widely respected for his tactical intelligence and leadership as a center-half. He also represented the Pakistan national team during his career.

His death has left teammates, students, and sports organizers in deep sorrow. Many have described him not only as a great athlete but also as a mentor, leader, and humanitarian figure.

According to family sources, his funeral will be held in the capital before burial at Banani graveyard, where sports personalities, former players, and well-wishers are expected to attend.

His passing is considered an irreparable loss for Bangladesh’s sports arena, and his lifelong dedication will remain an inspiration for future generations.
