Following a walkout by opposition parties from the National Parliament session, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed expressed his position on the matter. He stated that according to parliamentary procedure, opposition parties have the right to walk out, but the issues discussed must remain recorded in the proceedings.
The MP from Cox’s Bazar-1 said that even though the opposition leaders walked out, the government’s position should also be officially recorded. He noted that he had objected when the Deputy Speaker accepted the adjourned proposal.
The Home Minister added that constitutional amendment issues are generally resolved through legislation. Discussions on such matters under an adjourned proposal are limited. Nevertheless, the Speaker considered the importance of the issue and allowed the discussion, allocating the scheduled time accordingly.
He also said that detailed discussions took place between both sides in Parliament and, according to parliamentary practice, the matter is considered concluded. He mentioned that adjourned proposals do not have provisions for voting.
The opposition had claimed that their proposal was ignored, prompting the walkout. The incident sparked political tension in Parliament, although proceedings continued normally.
