Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and a member of parliament, has been found guilty by a panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court for attempting to exert foreign influence over the country’s judicial system.
During the hearing held on Tuesday, three out of four judges on the panel ruled against Eduardo Bolsonaro. With one judge’s vote still pending, he was sentenced to four years and two months in prison based on the majority decision.
The court observed that the case was not merely about expressing political opinions, but rather an attempt to pressure and influence the judicial process. Judge Cristiano Zanin stated that such actions threaten the independence of the judiciary and are punishable under law.
According to the prosecution, Eduardo Bolsonaro sought support from political circles in the United States in an attempt to influence ongoing cases against his father, Jair Bolsonaro. Prosecutors alleged that he tried to obstruct judicial proceedings through foreign political pressure.
Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence in a case related to attempts to remain in power after the 2022 elections. The prosecution argues that those events were part of an attempted coup against constitutional governance. However, the Bolsonaro family has consistently denied the allegations, calling the case politically motivated.
In 2025, Eduardo Bolsonaro announced that he had permanently moved to the United States. At that time, he stated that his primary goal was to build international support for his father’s release.
The case has sparked new debate in Brazilian politics. Analysts say the ruling is another major setback for the Bolsonaro family, one of the most influential right-wing political dynasties in Brazil.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has previously criticized foreign interference in the country’s judicial process. His government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting judicial independence.
Political observers believe the ruling may increase political tensions in Brazil ahead of the upcoming presidential elections, particularly regarding the Bolsonaro family’s future and the influence of right-wing voters.
