Government Will Take Steps to Rehabilitate Flood-Affected People in Bandarban: State Minister Anindya Islam Amit

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has said that the government will take necessary measures to rehabilitate families affected by the recent floods in Bandarban.

He said that houses which have become completely or partially uninhabitable due to the disaster will be reconstructed through government initiatives, and arrangements will be made to rehabilitate the affected families.

The State Minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a relief distribution programme among flood-affected people at Balaghata Ambagan area of Bandarban town on Wednesday (July 15) morning.

The State Minister said that families living at the foothills of hills are among the most vulnerable during natural disasters. Therefore, initiatives will be taken to gradually relocate people living in risky areas to safer locations and ensure their rehabilitation.

He said such measures would help reduce the loss of lives and property caused by floods, landslides, and other disasters in the future.

He further said that the government will take necessary steps to restore the Mexi Canal, one of the important drainage routes of Bandarban town.

He said the natural flow of the canal has been disrupted for a long time, increasing the risk of waterlogging and sudden flooding in the town. Restoring the canal would improve the city’s drainage system and significantly reduce future suffering, he added.

Senior officials of the local administration, public representatives, political leaders, and prominent local residents were present at the relief distribution programme.

Speakers at the event stressed the need to ensure quick rehabilitation and necessary assistance for affected families.

It was also informed at the programme that along with the government, local administration officials are continuing their field-level efforts to reduce the suffering of flood-affected people.
