Police have arrested 13 people allegedly linked to the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations for staging a sudden procession on the Dhaka–Aricha Highway in Savar’s Bhanga Bridge area. A case has been filed against them following the operation.
According to police, a group of 35 to 40 people carried banners and sticks and suddenly brought out a procession at different points of the highway from Tuesday (July 14) evening to night. After completing the procession, the participants quickly left the area and went into hiding.
Later, police conducted an operation and arrested 13 people.
The arrested individuals are—Sagar Molla, Mohammad Ali, Raju Ahmed, Olil Mia, Rajib Sarker, Pradip Kundu, Shahid Hossain, Ratan Kumar Rajbangshi, Mokshedur Rahman Sohel, Hridoy Hossain, Jibon Saha, Mokammel Hossain, and Sajib Mia.
According to police sources, four of those arrested work as drivers at rent-a-car companies in the Savar bus stand area. The remaining nine are allegedly leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
Law enforcement officials said that after receiving information about the sudden procession, surveillance and operations were intensified at various points of the highway. During the operation, several people were detained, while some others managed to escape by swimming through nearby water bodies.
Savar Model Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Anwar Hossain said that most of the arrested individuals are residents of Savar Municipality area. Preliminary investigations suggest that they were followers of several local Awami League leaders.
Savar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Nur Mohammad said that a case was filed against those involved on Wednesday morning. The process of sending the arrested individuals to court has been completed. At the same time, efforts are continuing to identify and arrest those who fled.
Police said investigations are underway to confirm the identities of other people involved in the sudden procession, and necessary legal action will be taken based on the information gathered.
