Rail communication between Khulna and northern regions, including Dhaka, was disrupted for several hours after a freight train derailed in Kotchandpur of Jhenaidah.
After nearly 5 hours of rescue operations, train movement resumed from Thursday morning.
Railway sources said that around 3 am on Wednesday night, a freight train coming from Mongla Port and heading toward Ishwardi reached Safdarpur railway station in Kotchandpur Upazila when a rear wagon suddenly derailed. As a result, train services on the Khulna–Rajshahi route and northern routes were halted.
Immediately after the incident, railway authorities began rescue operations. At around 7 am on Thursday, a rescue train from Khulna arrived at the scene and started recovery work. Later, after removing the derailed wagon and repairing the track, train services resumed from 8 am.
Safdarpur Station Master Ripon Ali said that although rail communication was temporarily disrupted due to the accident, quick recovery efforts helped avoid major suffering.
