BNP leader killed in Araihazar due to dispute over soil excavation, 3 arrested

In Araihazar Upazila of Narayanganj, a BNP leader named Osman Gani (40) was allegedly hacked to death over a long-standing dispute regarding soil excavation. Police have arrested three individuals, including a Jubo Dal leader, on suspicion of involvement in the murder.

The incident took place around 12:45 am on Wednesday night in the Kaudanda Chak area near a field in the Panchgaon Charpara area of Duptara Union in the upazila.

The deceased Osman Gani was the son of the late Abdul Rashid of Bara Binairchar village. He served as the General Secretary of Brahmandi Union BNP.

According to police and local sources, there had been a dispute between Osman Gani and several local individuals over the sale of soil in the Panchgaon area. In particular, he reportedly had conflicts with Ranjan Mia, the member secretary of Duptara Union Jubo Dal.

Eyewitnesses said that on Wednesday night, a excavator used for soil extraction got stuck in mud. Osman Gani went to the spot after receiving the news. After staying there for some time, while returning home, a group of miscreants intercepted him.

According to those accompanying him, the attackers had covered their faces with towels and targeted Osman Gani directly. He was first attacked with iron rods and later hacked repeatedly with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. He collapsed at the scene.

Later, locals rescued him and took him to Araihazar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Following the incident, tension spread in the area. In protest of the killing, supporters of Osman Gani blocked the Brahmandi–Gauchia road and staged demonstrations. During the protest, they burned tires on the road, stopping traffic, and vandalized several vehicles.

Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Alauddin confirmed the incident and said that three people have been detained on suspicion of involvement in the murder. Investigation is ongoing to identify the motive and other involved individuals.
