In Ramu Upazila of Cox’s Bazar, the District Detective Police (DB) arrested the wife of a BNP leader and her associate, a Rohingya citizen, with 40,000 pieces of yaba tablets during a raid.
The operation was conducted at around 9:30 pm on Wednesday in the Hajirpara area of Kachhapia Union in Ramu Upazila based on secret information. During the raid, a large quantity of yaba tablets was recovered from the house of local BNP leader Nazrul Islam.
The arrested individuals are—Saleka Begum (45), wife of Nazrul Islam, Vice President of Kachhapia Union BNP, and Mohammad Hasim alias Osman (35), a resident of Rohingya Camp-13 in Thaingkhali, Ukhiya.
Police sources said that a drug trafficking network had been operating in the area for a long time. Acting on confidential information, a DB team conducted the raid at the house. During the operation, 40,000 yaba tablets were seized, while several other members of the syndicate managed to flee.
Ramu Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed the incident and said that a case under the Narcotics Control Act is being processed against the two arrested individuals. He also added that law enforcement operations are continuing to arrest the fugitive members of the group.
