Four new leaders have been included in the National Standing Committee, the highest policy-making forum of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The party announced the decision in a press release issued on Saturday (August 15).

The newly appointed members of the Standing Committee are BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, BNP Chairman’s Adviser Md. Amanullah Aman, Dr. Farhad Halim Donar and Md. Ismail Jabiullah.

According to the party statement, the decision was taken as part of an ongoing effort to make organizational activities more dynamic and increase the involvement of experienced leaders at the policy-making level. The BNP expects the new members to contribute to important decision-making by providing necessary advice based on their experience, knowledge and political judgment.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has long played an important role in the central politics of the BNP. Rizvi, who is serving as the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General, previously served as Joint Secretary General. During his student years, he was elected vice-president of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU). He later served as president of the Jatiyatabadi Swechhasebak Dal.

Amanullah Aman is also a well-known figure in BNP politics and has been involved in the party for many years. His rise to national politics came through the anti-autocracy movement of the 1990s. He was elected vice-president of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). He later served as the BNP’s student affairs secretary and joint secretary general. Before being included in the Standing Committee, he had been serving as an adviser to the BNP chairman.

Dr. Farhad Halim Donar has played an active role in BNP politics, particularly in organizing professionals. He serves as chairman of the Bangladesh Medical Studies and Research Institute (BMSRI), chief adviser to the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), and executive director of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation. He is also a former convener of the BNP’s Dhaka North City unit.

Meanwhile, Md. Ismail Jabiullah had also been serving as an adviser to the BNP chairman. He is currently serving as the government’s adviser for public administration.

According to party sources, several positions in the BNP Standing Committee had recently become vacant. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir resigned from the posts of party Secretary General and Standing Committee member after being nominated as a presidential candidate. Another position became vacant following the death of former Speaker Barrister Jamir Uddin Sarkar. Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia has been unable to regularly attend Standing Committee meetings due to illness. Meanwhile, Mahbubur Rahman has remained inactive in politics for a long period.

In this situation, the inclusion of four new leaders in the party’s policy-making forum is being viewed by the BNP as a step toward strengthening its organizational structure and giving greater momentum to its activities.
