After remaining shut for one day due to a mechanical fault, Unit 1 of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Dinajpur has resumed electricity generation. The unit was restarted at around 9:30am on Saturday (August 15) after repair work was completed.
The plant authorities said Unit 1 is currently supplying around 50 to 55 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.
According to plant sources, a mechanical fault suddenly developed in a pump of Unit 1 on Friday morning. As a safety measure, electricity generation from the unit was suspended. Engineers and technical workers then identified the fault and carried out the necessary repairs. After the repair work was completed, the unit resumed generation on Saturday morning.
Abu Bakar Siddique, chief engineer of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant, confirmed the matter and said Unit 1 is currently supplying 50 to 55 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.
The plant has a total of three units. Unit 3 is also currently operational and is supplying approximately 160 to 180 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.
Meanwhile, Unit 2 of the plant has remained out of production since 2020. As a result, electricity is currently being supplied to the national grid through Units 1 and 3 of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant.
With the resumption of Unit 1, the plant’s overall electricity generation capacity has increased to some extent, and the electricity supply situation to the national grid has also returned to normal.
