Founder President of Tangail District BNP Hamidul Haque Dies

During a public outreach program, Hamidul Haque (Mohan), founding president of the Tangail district BNP and a veteran freedom fighter, fell ill and passed away. Doctors at Tangail Medical College Hospital declared him dead at 8:00 PM on Monday after examinations.

The ICU doctor on duty, Mahmudul Haque, stated that Hamidul Haque died of a heart-related illness at the age of 77. The senior politician was a hopeful for the BNP nomination from Tangail-6 (Nagarpur-Delduar) constituency in the upcoming national parliamentary elections.

Ferdous Ahmed, General Secretary of Delduar Upazila BNP, said that on October 12, Hamidul Haque held a meeting with party leaders and activists and announced his intention to seek the nomination from Tangail-6. He then began public outreach in various areas. On Monday afternoon, after giving a speech at a meeting organized by the local BNP on the 31-point reform proposal in Deuli Union, he performed prayers at a nearby mosque. Feeling unwell on his way back, he was taken to Tangail Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.

In his personal life, Hamidul Haque was the brother-in-law of language movement veteran Abdul Matin (Bhasha-Matin). He is survived by his wife, two sons, and three daughters. His body is currently kept at his residence in Collegepara area, Tangail. His elder son, Milton Haque, stated that he will be buried at Tangail Central Graveyard on Tuesday, with the time and place of the funeral prayers to be announced later.

Prabha Rani Sheel, former president of the Nagarpur Upazila Nationalist Women’s Party, recalled that during his last speech in Deuli village, Mohan Bhai gave an emotional address. He told party activists,
"My hair has all turned grey. Do not think I cannot work for you. I want to serve the people until my last breath."

Hamidul Haque entered politics as a student through the Student Union (Menon Group). In the 1969 mass uprising, he served as Joint Convenor of Tangail District All-Party Student Struggle Council. He was also actively involved in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. After independence, he joined Bhasani NAP politics, which later merged with BNP. He became the founding president of Tangail district BNP and served as district president for 17 years.

In addition to politics, Hamidul Haque was involved in various social organizations. He served as President of Tangail Citizens’ Rights Protection Committee and Secretary for Self-Reliance of BNP Central Committee.

His death has cast a shadow of grief over Tangail’s political and social circles.
