BNP leader Rashed Khan has claimed that during the student movement, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam wanted to keep the quota reform movement limited to reforms rather than allowing it to turn into an anti-government uprising. He made the remarks during a talk show on a private television channel.

He said Hasnat and Sarjis initially wanted the quota reform movement to succeed but did not want it to turn into a mass uprising. He alleged that they participated in talks with government ministers on July 19 during the peak of the movement, which raised questions at the time.

He further claimed that their later participation in movements demanding a ban on the Awami League was an attempt to change political positioning.

He added that there were questions about Hasnat Abdullah’s role during different phases of the student movement and that discussions had taken place in various circles. He also referred to a book by former adviser Asif Mahmud.

He said that at one point Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam were reportedly traveling toward Bangabhaban in an army vehicle, which had been questioned by some movement leaders.

However, no immediate response was available from Hasnat Abdullah or Sarjis Alam regarding these statements.

Political analysts say that recent conflicting statements among political parties and student leaders are creating new controversies in the political landscape.
