New clashes have erupted between the United States and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz region, raising fears that a ceasefire may collapse.
The US accused Iran of attacking American Navy warships in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday. Iran, however, claimed that the United States initiated attacks on Iranian vessels and coastal areas.
Former US President Donald Trump said on social media that three US destroyers were attacked while crossing the Strait, but no damage occurred. He also claimed Iranian forces suffered significant losses in retaliation.
Iran’s military said the US violated the ceasefire by attacking an Iranian oil tanker and another vessel, as well as conducting airstrikes on coastal areas and Qeshm Island.
Iran said it responded by targeting US naval vessels in the eastern Strait of Hormuz and near the port of Chabahar, claiming significant damage, although the US military denied these claims.
Analysts say this is the most serious escalation since the ceasefire began. However, both sides reportedly still prefer diplomatic solutions over full-scale war.
Experts warn that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, and any escalation could severely impact global energy markets, as nearly one-fifth of global oil and LNG passes through it.
The UAE said it intercepted missiles and drones launched from Iran during the tensions. Reports also mentioned attacks on an oil refinery in Fujairah.
Diplomatic efforts are reportedly ongoing to maintain the ceasefire, and Iran is still reviewing the latest peace proposals from the United States.
Analysts believe both sides are trying to strengthen their positions, but neither wants uncontrolled escalation. However, continued tension could quickly worsen the situation.
