The Israeli military has launched an investigation into an incident involving alleged desecration of a religious statue in southern Lebanon. The action follows a social media image showing a soldier behaving inappropriately with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Israeli army described the incident as “serious” and said disciplinary action would be taken against the soldier involved. The matter gained widespread attention after being reported in international media.

Investigations revealed that the photo was taken several weeks ago in the Christian-majority village of Debel in southern Lebanon, but it recently surfaced online. The image shows a soldier placing a cigarette in the statue’s mouth while smoking.

This is not the first such incident. Earlier, allegations surfaced that Israeli soldiers damaged religious structures in the same area. Local media also reported destruction of a statue of Jesus in Debel, along with damage to solar panels, water systems, homes, and agricultural land.

Israeli forces say they are conducting operations targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. However, reports of damage to civilian infrastructure have been increasing alongside these operations.

The incident has raised concerns among local residents in Lebanon, many of whom fear that displacement will become more severe due to ongoing conflict.

Meanwhile, international criticism is increasing over religious sensitivities in Israel. Authorities have faced repeated scrutiny over incidents involving Christian religious symbols and sites.

Analysts say such incidents could negatively impact Israel’s international image and further complicate the ongoing conflict situation.
