In three separate cases of plot allocation corruption in Dhaka’s East Chal New Town Project, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and daughter Saima Wazed Putul have been sentenced. Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to 7 years in each case, totaling 21 years.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy received a 5-year sentence and a fine of 100,000 Taka in one case, and Saima Wazed Putul was sentenced to 5 years in another case.
Judge Md. Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka’s Fifth Special Judge Court announced the verdict Thursday afternoon. Arguments concluded on November 23, and the verdict date was set for November 27.
A total of 47 people were defendants in the three cases, with 23 individuals in person. Other defendants include former Housing and Public Works State Minister Sharif Ahmed, former RAJUK Chairman Anisur Rahman Miah, former member Mohammad Khurshid Alam, former Secretary Shahid Ulla Khandakar, and 20 others.
Only one defendant was acquitted: Saiful Islam Sarkar, an administrative officer in the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. Mohammad Khurshid Alam, the only detained defendant, received a total of 3 years (1 year per case).
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed six separate cases in January over plot allocation corruption. Other accused included Sheikh Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana’s daughter British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, son Radwan Mujib Siddiq, daughter Azmina Siddiq, among others. Today, verdicts in three of these cases were announced.
Previously, on November 17, in a war crimes case, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death.
