Flood Havoc in Feni: Thousands Affected as Dams Collapse on Muhuri and Silonia Rivers

PNN Report | Feni, June 21, 2025: Continuous rainfall combined with heavy upstream water from India has led to the collapse of embankments at two critical points on the Muhuri and Silonia rivers, inundating vast low-lying areas of Parshuram and Phulgazi upazilas in Feni district. Thousands of people have been left stranded, facing immense suffering, while homes, croplands, and businesses are under threat from the rising water.

On Thursday afternoon (June 19), the Silonia River embankment broke near Monipur village adjacent to Subar Bazar in Mirzanagar Union of Parshuram. The floodwaters rushed into nearby localities, submerging the lowlands and forcing residents into a desperate situation.

Later that night, another embankment gave way on the Muhuri River at Uttar Baroiya in Phulgazi, rapidly flooding homes, roads, and farmland in the village. The deluge in the dead of night also submerged Dakshin Baroiya, Bijoypur, Boshontopur, Fatehpur, and Bashikhpur, among other nearby areas. Reports indicate that Phulgazi Bazar was also affected, with shops and goods suffering water damage. Additionally, riverbanks overflowed in multiple spots in Parshuram, pushing more floodwaters into residential zones.

According to Nepal Saha, Gauge Reader at the Water Development Board, water levels in the Muhuri River began receding slightly from Friday morning (June 20). The river was flowing at 10.68 meters, close to the danger mark throughout Thursday. Although the water is receding, the suffering of flood-affected residents continues.

Local authorities and public representatives are making efforts to assist the affected, but residents are demanding emergency embankment repairs and increased relief support to recover from the devastating impact.
