PNN Staff Report
Five members of the Iran women’s football team have taken refuge in a “safe house” in Australia following the AFC Women’s Asian Cup due to safety concerns. After losing the last group stage match to the Philippines, their return to Iran was uncertain.
BBC reported that earlier, some players refused to sing Iran’s national anthem before a match against South Korea, triggering harsh criticism at home. Several supporters demonstrated outside the team bus, shouting “Save our girls.”
FIFPRO Asia & Oceania President Beu Bush urged FIFA, AFC, and the Australian government to ensure player safety. Some players may seek political asylum or extended stays abroad, as returning to Iran could pose risks.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that forcibly sending the players back would be a major humanitarian mistake, offering potential asylum if needed.
