Police have arrested five individuals, including former Upazila Chairman Mohaddes Hossain, in Dhamrai, Dhaka, over the killing of a student during an anti-discrimination movement.
They were arrested around midnight on Monday from a house in Novinagar, Ashulia, Savar.
The others arrested include—Dhaka District Council member Sanowar Hossain Sujan, Dhamrai Sadar Union Parishad Chairman Moshiur Rahman Mosi, Dhamrai Municipal Jubo League President Md. Aminur Rahman, and banned Chhatra League leader Md. Ahad.
Police said they were sent to the Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Court on Tuesday morning, and a request has been made for a 10-day remand for interrogation.
According to the case, during the anti-discrimination movement, these Awami League leaders and former representatives allegedly attacked students and the public with gunfire, hand grenades, and other forms of sabotage.
The incident occurred on August 5, 2024, around 11:00 AM in the courtyard of Harding School and College in Dhamrai municipality. The accused allegedly joined forces with then Dhamrai Police Station OC Sirajul Islam Sheikh, SI Pabel Molla, SI Raju Mondal, and other police personnel to launch a brutal attack on the protesting students.
During the indiscriminate firing by the police, hundreds of students were seriously injured. One student was shot in the head during the attack and later died on August 8 while undergoing treatment at Savar Enam Medical College Hospital.
Dhamrai Police Station OC Monirul Islam confirmed that these five individuals were arrested in connection with the student killing and sabotage case and were sent to court on Tuesday morning.
