PNN News Desk | Sirajganj:

A shotgun belonging to an Ansar member sank in the Jamuna River in Chauhali Upazila, Sirajganj during a campaign to protect mother hilsa fish. Since the incident, a recovery operation has been ongoing for three days with assistance from the Fire Service and local residents. The administration confirmed the update on Wednesday, 15 October.

Authorities reported that since 4 September, the government and the Department of Fisheries have been conducting campaigns across the country to conserve mother hilsa fish. As part of this initiative, a campaign was underway on Monday, 13 October, in the Shailjana area of Umarpur Union, Chauhali. During the operation, Ansar member Tabibur Rahman Raihan accidentally dropped his shotgun into the river.

UNO and Executive Magistrate of Chauhali, Mostafizur Rahman, stated that he was leading the operation along with other members. After a speedboat capsized due to strong currents, the UNO and participants fell into the river but were rescued by a nearby boat. However, the shotgun belonging to Tabibur sank into the river’s deep waters.

Robiul Islam, leader of Tangail Fire Service, said, “We launched a recovery operation after receiving the news. However, strong currents and the river’s depth are causing difficulties, and the shotgun has not yet been recovered.” He added that locals are assisting by using nets, and the navy’s support will also be sought.

The recovery operation is still ongoing, and the administration is making all-out efforts to retrieve the shotgun as quickly as possible.
