The rising water has forced the closure of ferries operating on the Rangamati-Bandarban road, which has also halted bus services. However, the lake’s water level decreased slightly on Friday compared to Thursday. After releasing water through 16 gates to control the flow at the Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station, the current increased, affecting ferry operations. Since ferry movement depends on water management at the Kaptai dam, the ferries remain suspended.
Around 2,500 families in Rangamati Sadar, Baghaichar, and Langadu upazilas are stranded, with 103 families taking shelter in seven relief centers. Additionally, the BSCIC Industrial Estate in Manikchhari has been submerged, with water still covering three roads, disrupting transportation of goods.
Locals report facing many difficulties due to being stranded. The administration is providing emergency food and various aids in the affected areas. Langadu Upazila Executive Officer Md. Jahangir Hossain said that food arrangements have been made for those in shelters and affected people, and dry food is also being distributed to others.
There are concerns that the suffering of the stranded families may increase if the climatic conditions do not improve.
