Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the North Region of the National Citizens Party (NCP), issued a stern warning to the advisers of the interim government, stating that if they attempt to conclude their responsibilities—achieved through a massive popular uprising and the blood of countless martyrs—merely by organizing an election and then “exit,” the people of Bangladesh will never forgive them. He emphasized that advisers should avoid thinking that merely holding an election will preserve their honor.

Alam made these remarks on Monday evening in Rajshahi, responding to questions from journalists after a coordination meeting of the party’s district and metropolitan committees. The meeting was held at the Chamber of Commerce building at Alkar Mor in the city, with NCP leaders from Rajshahi district and metropolis in attendance.

Sarjis Alam clarified that the advisers’ responsibility is not limited to conducting an election. He stated that the reforms and decisive actions expected by the people in the post-uprising period have not yet been fully realized. The people wanted to see an end to the wrongdoings they had protested against. The NCP leader warned that advisers will be held accountable for this failure.

Urging the advisers to perform their duties courageously, he said, “Rather than quietly leaving or exiting with just a superficial responsibility, it is honorable to take action for the people, even if you personally face setbacks. Those setbacks will themselves be honorable.” He wants the advisers to embrace the spirit of the uprising and implement their decisions accordingly.

Criticizing the Election Commission’s functioning, Alam stated that if the current commission continues in the same manner as previous ones, it would be shameful in the context of the uprising.

He also raised concerns about the conditions for political party registration. Alam said that while NCP is working hard to fulfill the requirements by forming committees in 22 districts and 100 upazilas, “a party can be registered merely by hanging a two-foot-by-one-and-a-half-foot PVC banner. This cannot be acceptable.” He demanded that the Election Commission revise its regulations.

Responding to questions about the inclusion of former Awami League leaders and activists in the party’s various committees, Alam reaffirmed NCP’s position. He stated that anyone who opposed the July uprising, played a supporting role in fascist activities, or was involved in various wrongdoings cannot hold any place in the NCP. He added that if concrete evidence emerges against anyone, the party will take swift action.
