Bangladesh State Reform Movement President Hasanat Kaiyum said that if reforms supported by public referendum are delayed, it would be considered a betrayal of the people.

He made the remarks on Friday morning at a discussion meeting held at the National Press Club in Dhaka titled “From the Declaration of Independence to the July Charter: A Trap of Betrayal in Bangladesh,” organized by the Bangladesh State Reform Movement.

He said the people support reforms related to fair elections, voting rights, judicial independence, and anti-corruption measures. He emphasized the need for constitutional reforms.

He warned that ignoring public directives delivered through referendum would undermine democratic values and could damage government legitimacy.

Referring to the ideals of the 1971 independence declaration, he said that equality, human dignity, and social justice have not yet been fully achieved.

He also warned that if reforms are delayed, people may again take to the streets for political change.

Speakers at the event stressed the importance of reforms for sustainable democracy.
