PNN News Desk | Dhaka:
Higher secondary students of Dhaka College have expressed concerns that the proposed structure of the Dhaka Central University could harm their interests. They stated that they will not accept any changes or reductions to the existing academic framework and have written to the University Grants Commission (UGC) demanding the draft of the university ordinance be made public.
On Monday (September 22), at a press conference in the Dhaka College auditorium, student Nuruz Shafa read a statement saying that they are deeply worried about the uncertain future for higher secondary students after the establishment of the central university. He also noted that higher secondary students’ opinions were not sought in the university planning process.
The key concerns of the higher secondary students include:
Establishing a “School of Science” on the Dhaka College campus may undermine the college’s heritage and cause an identity crisis for students.
Running higher secondary and university academic activities simultaneously through time-sharing is not practical and may disrupt academics.
The presence of two different education systems on the same campus could create political and academic issues.
Ownership and management of movable and immovable assets remain uncertain.
Including female students in the university may make it difficult to preserve Dhaka College’s heritage.
Nuruz Shafa stated that if any policy contrary to higher secondary students’ interests is adopted in the university ordinance, they will not accept it, and they have demanded that the UGC release the draft ordinance.
