The process of establishing “Dhaka Central University,” combining seven government colleges in Dhaka (Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Titumir College, Mirpur Government Bangla College, Begum Badrunnesa Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, and Kabi Nazrul Government College), is underway. The Ministry of Education stated that finalizing the university ordinance for 2025 will take some time, but students’ academic activities will not be disrupted.
A press release from the Ministry’s Public Relations office said that classes for the 2024–25 academic year students are scheduled to start on 23 November. The university’s establishment aims to ensure quality education, timely exams, and result publication for students from the seven colleges.
As part of preparation, the University Grants Commission (UGC) drafted an ordinance and submitted it to the Secondary and Higher Education Division. Over 5,000 public comments were received, and three consultation meetings were held with teachers, students, academics, and civil society. The division is carefully reviewing all feedback for legal and practical feasibility before revising the draft ordinance.
An interim administrator has been appointed to ensure continuity of academic activities, with responsibilities including admissions, registration, and class management. The Ministry emphasized that while the university establishment is time-consuming, it will safeguard the interests of students, teachers, and stakeholders and result in a widely accepted and coordinated decision. Dhaka Central University will be a significant step in improving the quality of higher education in Bangladesh.
The public is urged to act responsibly to maintain students’ uninterrupted education and avoid confusion or conflict.
