Severe erosion has occurred in Chilmar, Kurigram, as the Brahmaputra River swells due to continuous rainfall. Over the past five days, at least 60 houses and around 300 acres of cropland have been swallowed by the river, leaving over a hundred families homeless.

Crops such as peanuts, rice, and other seasonal produce have been destroyed by the river.

In Fakirerhat Kalirkura area of Rangiganj Union, severe erosion has affected the southern part of the T-embankment, putting the Brahmaputra protection embankment and other structures at risk. Local doctor Lal Mia said, “This severe erosion is pushing our lives and livelihoods toward destruction. Schools, mosques, roads, and graveyards are also at risk.”

Rakibul Hasan, Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board, stated that the affected areas have been inspected and emergency preventive measures are being implemented.
