The court has sentenced the main accused, Md. Abir, to death in the widely discussed case involving the abduction, murder, and dismemberment of five-year-old child Ayat in Chattogram. The court also imposed a fine of 100,000 taka.

On Wednesday (June 17), Judge Muhammad Ali Akkas of the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court in Chattogram announced the verdict, bringing a major chapter of the long judicial process to a close.

Court sources said arguments in the case were completed last Saturday. During the trial, 33 witnesses testified on behalf of the state prosecution. After reviewing witness statements and case documents, the court delivered the judgment.

According to case details, on November 14, 2022, child Ayat went missing while going to an Arabic class at a nearby mosque in the Noyarhat area of EPZ Police Station in Chattogram city. Later investigation revealed that neighbor Abir Ali abducted her for ransom.

Investigators found that after the abduction, when there was no opportunity to move the child elsewhere, Abir strangled her to death. He then dismembered the body and dumped the remains in different locations to conceal the crime.

Sixteen days later, on November 30, police recovered the child’s two legs from a pit near a water gate area beside Akmal Ali Ghat on the Outer Ring Road. The next day, the dismembered head was also recovered from the same area. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) later uncovered the details of the killing and arrested Abir.

The brutal murder of child Ayat had sparked nationwide outrage. The court verdict is being seen as an important step toward justice for the victim’s family.
