The body of a five-year-old girl who went missing in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh was recovered from the Kongsho River just hours later.
After visible injury marks were found on the body, the incident has caused shock in the area. Police suspect that the child may have been sexually assaulted and then killed.
According to police and local sources, the child went missing after leaving her home in the afternoon. Despite searching, family members could not find her.
Later in the evening, locals spotted a child’s body floating in a bend of the Kongsho River not far from the house. The family identified the body after being informed.
At first, the family believed it might have been an accident or natural death. However, while preparing for burial at night, they discovered injury marks on sensitive parts of the body while washing it. They immediately informed the police.
Police arrived at the scene late at night, prepared an inquest report, and recovered the body. It was later sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy on Monday morning.
The child’s father, in tears, said that his daughter had gone outside to play after eating in the afternoon and went missing shortly after. He demanded justice and punishment for those responsible.
Dhobaura police station officer-in-charge Shafiqul Islam said the case is being investigated seriously. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report. However, he did not rule out the possibility of sexual assault followed by murder.
He also said that police, along with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), are working to identify those involved and bring them to justice quickly.
