Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced plans to introduce a special “Farmer Card” program aimed at supporting farmers and strengthening Bangladesh’s agricultural sector. He said the initiative would include one-time financial assistance for purchasing seeds and pesticides to help boost agricultural production and rural economic development.
He made the remarks on Saturday morning while addressing a roadside public meeting organized to mark the inauguration of the Patli–Machuakhali Canal Re-Excavation Project in PMkhali Union of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila.
Tarique Rahman stated that a significant portion of Bangladesh’s population lives in rural areas and that improving their quality of life remains a top government priority. To reduce production costs and enhance agricultural productivity, the government has undertaken a range of initiatives, including a specialized support system for farmers based on identity registration.
He announced that the government aims to distribute Farmer Cards to thousands of farmers in every upazila within the next year. Through these cards, farmers will be able to access various government incentives and assistance programs more efficiently.
Highlighting the importance of women’s education, he said sustainable national development depends on improving women’s educational and economic opportunities. He referred to plans for expanding educational support for women up to higher education levels and increasing scholarship opportunities for meritorious students.
Regarding the canal restoration project, the Prime Minister said the long-neglected waterway would significantly improve agriculture, irrigation, and local transportation once restored. Thousands of farmers are expected to benefit directly from the project, while irrigation facilities for vast areas of farmland will also improve.
He further stated that agriculture has been prioritized in the national budget through special allocations. At the same time, the government has taken steps to reduce the cost of living by lowering taxes on various products.
Reaffirming his commitment to continuing development initiatives, Tarique Rahman said all government plans are being implemented with the welfare of the people and the country’s overall progress in mind.
The event was attended by local public representatives, government officials, farmer representatives, and people from various professions.
