A storm has erupted over the recruitment process for lecturers in the Urdu Department at Dhaka University. Allegations have surfaced that the selection board overlooked more qualified candidates and recommended individuals loyal to the Awami League for the positions. To make a final decision on the matter, a syndicate meeting is scheduled for today (27 August) at 5:00 PM.
According to the selection board’s recommendation, Md. Shafiqul Islam Sihab and Mosha Alpana Akter have been proposed for the lecturer positions. However, candidates who were overlooked claim that more qualified individuals were excluded. The allegations suggest that the two selected candidates are comparatively less competent based on the university’s public results, research activities, and academic qualifications.
The selection board chairman and Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed has stated that the candidates were chosen based on the consensus of all board members. He said, “No one can be excluded based on someone’s word. The matter will be discussed in detail at the syndicate meeting.”
Meanwhile, the candidates who were left out allege that for the past 15 years, the selection board has made decisions based on political affiliation and party loyalty rather than professional merit and research evaluation. They have demanded a fair, merit-based recruitment process from the administration.
The chairman of the Urdu Department, Golam Maola, clarified that candidates who performed well and passed the viva were recommended for appointment. He emphasized that no political bias or irregularity occurred.
The university administration, the Ministry of Education, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) are monitoring the recruitment process. Final approval for the appointments will be granted based on the syndicate meeting’s decision.
