Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of BNP, has stated that establishing a truly democratic state in Bangladesh is the party’s sole objective. He made the remarks on Wednesday (27 August) during a discussion at the National Press Club.

The event was organized by the Bhasani Anusari Parishad and Bhasani Janashakti Party on the occasion of the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Qazi Zafar Ahmad.

Mirza Fakhrul said that democratic forces in the country are being prevented from coming to power. He alleged, “If elections had been held on time, today’s crisis would not have arisen. The government is still trying to complicate the election process.”

He called for swift reform of the electoral system and the holding of free and fair elections, emphasizing, “The crisis can only be resolved through democratic means. There is no alternative.”

The BNP leader further said that a section of politics is deliberately attempting to disrupt the election process, which the common people do not want. “Various excuses are being raised to threaten the electoral environment,” he added.

Expressing disappointment over the current situation, Mirza Fakhrul stated, “Corruption is widespread, and the expected change has not come. Unfortunately, political leaders are also involved in corruption. In this situation, everyone must come forward to save the country.”

He also warned, “Anti-liberation forces are making big claims today. Therefore, everyone must remain vigilant and not become complacent, assuming victory in advance.”
