Local sources said the conflict began with a verbal spat during a rally and march organized to mark Victory Day, which later escalated into clashes. Police intervened several times to control the situation.
Mohammad Helal Uddin, Member Secretary of Upazila BNP, alleged that ahead of the elections, one side is deliberately creating conflicts to disrupt the peaceful environment. He claimed that BNP activists were attacked during the Victory Day rally.
On the other hand, Upazila Jamaat Amir Mohammad Kamal Hossain told a press conference that while going to participate in the Victory Day rally in the morning, one of their activists was verbally abused and assaulted by two BNP members who called him “Razakar.” This led to a scuffle between the two sides. Later, in the afternoon, one of the Jamaat leaders’ businesses was attacked, and again in the evening, four Jamaat members’ shops were attacked and looted, resulting in 10–12 injuries.
Jamaat media cell officer Amir Hossain said that a written complaint was filed at the police station that night, demanding legal action against the culprits.
Police stated that additional forces have been deployed to maintain law and order. The situation is under control, but patrols have been increased. Investigations will be conducted, and legal actions will be taken regarding the clashes.
