PNN News Desk | Dhaka:
On Friday (October 17, 2025), around 1:15 PM, a violent clash broke out between police and the ‘July Warriors’ in the South Plaza of the National Parliament during the ‘July Charter Signing’ event. Hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the Parliament demanding their rights. When police tried to disperse them, tensions escalated. Several people were injured in baton charges, and a group of ‘July Warriors’ retaliated by vandalizing vehicles and throwing bricks and stones.
The unrest spread across the South Plaza of the Parliament, prompting police to take measures to control the situation. During the clash, multiple explosions were heard, and fires broke out along Manik Mia Avenue. Law enforcement also used sound grenades to regain control.
Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md. Shahidullah said that police were attacked with bricks and stones, and five police vehicles were vandalized. He added that law enforcement had taken extensive measures to restore order.
Police and the military remain on high alert at the scene, though the situation is still tense. The clash temporarily disrupted traffic for about an hour, with unrest spreading around Dhanmondi and Asad Gate areas.
Meanwhile, the ‘July Warriors’ strongly protested against the government’s inaction regarding their demands. They are calling for state recognition, legal protection, and rehabilitation for participants of the July movement.
In the evening, various political parties, including BNP, Jamaat, and Islami Andolan, confirmed their participation in the ‘July Charter Signing’ event at the South Plaza of the National Parliament. However, left-leaning parties, including CPB, BASAD, and JASAD, stated that they would not sign unless the draft charter was amended.
Despite the tension, law enforcement is fully prepared and is attempting to restore a peaceful situation.
