In a case concerning crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam of the International Crimes Tribunal has demanded the death penalty against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan. He made this request on Thursday after concluding the presentation of arguments in the case at International Crimes Tribunal-1.

The Chief Prosecutor stated in his petition that the two main accused, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan, face the death penalty due to sufficient evidence of crimes against humanity against them.

A total of three individuals are accused in this case. In addition to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan, the former Police Inspector General (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is also an accused. Mamun has already admitted his guilt and given a deposition as a state witness, in which he revealed the full truth of the events, according to the Chief Prosecutor.

Meanwhile, the state-appointed lawyer for the absconding accused, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan, Md. Amir Hossain, requested one week to prepare arguments on their behalf. The tribunal accepted this request and has directed that arguments from their side begin next Monday.

The case is being heard by a three-member tribunal led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder. The other two members are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

The nation is closely watching the upcoming hearings and the tribunal’s decision, as this case represents a significant moment in the country’s history and could mark important progress in human rights accountability.
