Despite Political Tensions, India-Pakistan Hockey Teams Send Message of Friendship on the Field

A new and significant moment was witnessed during the Sultan of Johor Cup hockey match held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, where Indian and Pakistani players shook hands and greeted each other. Such a display has rarely been seen, especially following the Asia Cup.

After the national anthems of both countries were played, the players stood on the field, shook hands, and exchanged greetings. In recent times, sporting encounters between the two countries have been marked by tension and controversy, making such moments rare in cricket and football as well. Notably, during the Asia Cup, the Indian cricket team had refused to shake hands with Pakistani players, sparking widespread debate. A similar incident occurred in the Women’s Cricket World Cup, where the Indian team refrained from handshakes with Pakistan.

In football, Pakistani players’ celebratory gestures—mock “tea drinking”—during the SAFF Under-17 Championship also drew attention, even though India won the match 3-2.

Meanwhile, in the Sultan of Johor Cup, the Indian junior men’s hockey team has been performing exceptionally. They remain undefeated so far, defeating Great Britain 3-2 in the first match and New Zealand 4-2 in the second. Pakistan has also shown strong performances, starting the tournament with a 7-1 win over Malaysia but losing to Great Britain in their second match.

A senior official from the Pakistan Hockey Federation had previously advised that if Indian players do not shake hands, Pakistani players should remain calm, avoid emotional reactions, and focus on the game. His guidance emphasized that sportsmanship should prevail on the field, leaving political and emotional matters off the pitch.

The handshake between players on the field symbolized mutual respect and opened a new chapter in sporting relations between India and Pakistan.
