PNN News Desk | Madaripur:
In the 2008 national elections, the Islamic Movement of Bangladesh had formally demanded elections based on the Proportional Representation (PR) system. Reiterating this demand at a public rally held on Tuesday afternoon at Swadhinata Angan in Madaripur town, the party’s Amir, Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim (Char Monai Pir), said, “There is no alternative to the PR system for establishing true democracy.”
He alleged that the BNP opposes the system to conceal its own weaknesses. He further claimed that if state reforms and visible justice are implemented, India will not be able to control Bangladesh, something that the neighboring country allegedly desires to prevent.
Char Monai Pir also criticized the government for prioritizing elections without ensuring justice for those injured and affected during the July unrest. He refuted claims by government-supported quarters that the Islamic Movement wants to delay the elections.
The rally was presided over by Madaripur District Branch President Maulana Aminul Islam, and speeches were delivered by Ashraf Ali Aken, Presidium Member; Maulana Lokman Hossain Jafri, Office Secretary; Maulana Ariful Islam, Organizational Secretary; and Maulana Mokleshur Rahman, District Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, among others.
After the rally, a public procession supporting various demands marched through the main streets of the town and concluded at Itterpul area.
