PNN News Desk | Dhaka:
The branch Chhatra Dal has demanded amendments to the rules for the Jagannath University Central Student Union (JKUSU) elections. On behalf of the organization, they proposed allowing MPhil and PhD students to vote and contest, adding nine new editorial positions, and abolishing the position of Finance Secretary.
On Tuesday, they submitted a written application to University Treasurer Professor Sabina Sharmin and Registrar Professor Sheikh Gias Uddin outlining these demands.
The new positions proposed by Chhatra Dal include:
Health Affairs Secretary
Secretary for Students with Special Needs
Media and Communications Secretary
Cultural Affairs Secretary
Skills Development Secretary
Law and Human Rights Secretary
Science and Technology Secretary
Environmental Affairs Secretary
Liberation War and Democratic Movements Secretary
Justifying the abolition of the Finance Secretary post, the Chhatra Dal leaders said that having a Finance Secretary in addition to the Treasurer could be redundant and create conflicts, so the position should be removed.
Branch Chhatra Dal Secretary Shamsul Arefin stated that reforming the rules is essential to protect student rights and strengthen democratic practices. He emphasized that adding positions related to culture, skills development, human rights, and science and technology is necessary to build a strong JKUSU.
The JKUSU elections are scheduled to be held on 27 November, with the election framework published by the university administration on 17 September.
