The deceased, Abul Kalam Azad, worked at a travel agency in Dhaka, where he sold airline tickets. He lived with his wife and two young children in a rented house in Nayailpara, Siddhirganj, Narayanganj.
At around 12 p.m. on Sunday, a heavy bearing pad from the metro rail structure near Farmgate Metro Station, adjacent to the Bangladesh Agricultural Institute, fell on him, killing him instantly.
Tejgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mobarak Hossain said, “Abul Kalam was walking along the road near the metro station when the bearing pad suddenly fell on him, causing his death on the spot.” Following the incident, metro rail operations were temporarily suspended but resumed later after technical inspections.
Soon after the accident, senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges visited the site. Muhammad Faozul Kabir Khan, Adviser to the Ministry, announced that the family of the deceased would receive Tk 5 lakh as financial compensation. He also stated that if a qualified family member wishes to work for the metro rail authority, employment opportunities will be arranged.
Adviser Faozul Kabir Khan further said that a committee headed by the Secretary of the Bridges Division has been formed to investigate the cause of the accident. The committee will determine whether the incident was due to sabotage or a construction fault.
Authorities of the Dhaka Metro Rail project have assured full cooperation and pledged to take responsibility for supporting the victim’s family.
