Grocery shop owner hacked to death in Bagerhat over buying juice

A grocery shop owner was hacked to death in broad daylight over an incident related to buying juice in Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat. The incident took place on Thursday (7 May) at around 7:00 AM in Hijla Westpara village of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Mojahidul Islam Molla (45). He was the son of Sarwar Molla of the same village and the owner of a local grocery shop.

According to locals, a verbal argument broke out in the morning between Mojahidul Islam and Bayojeed Sheikh, son of his neighbour Badsha Sheikh, over buying juice from the shop. At one point, Bayojeed became enraged and attacked Mojahidul Islam with a sharp sickle. He died on the spot.

After the incident, tension spread in the area. Angry locals attacked and vandalised the accused’s house and also beat Bayojeed Sheikh. Later, police arrived at the scene, brought the situation under control, and rescued the injured accused, sending him to hospital.

Chitalmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Nazrul Islam said that police visited the scene quickly after receiving information. The main accused involved in the incident has been arrested, and the process of filing a case is underway.

The body of Mojahidul Islam has been sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, police said.
