An incident of a school student being seriously injured after being beaten with an iron rod over an allegation of stealing pickle has been reported in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur. The incident took place on Wednesday (6 May) evening in front of Ruposhi Bangla Market at Pachar Bus Stand area of the upazila.
The injured student is Jubayer Ahmed (16). He is a tenth-grade student of Pachar High School. The accused Shami Hossain is also a tenth-grade student of the same school.
According to local sources and police, a few days earlier, pickle was stolen from the school bag of one of Jubayer’s friends. Shami was suspected in connection with the incident, which led to an argument and physical altercation between them.
Following this, on Wednesday evening, when Jubayer was alone, Shami and some of his associates allegedly attacked him. It is alleged that the attackers struck him on the head with an iron rod, causing serious injuries. Hearing his screams, locals rushed to the scene, and the attackers fled. Later, he was admitted to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex in injured condition.
The mother of the injured student, Laki Begum, said that her son was beaten in a planned attack over a minor issue and demanded justice for the incident.
However, the accused Shami Hossain denied the allegations, saying that he had been beaten earlier and that false accusations are being made against him.
Shibchar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Munjul Morshed said that the scene and the hospital were visited. A written complaint has been received from the victim’s family. He added that the matter will be investigated and legal action will be taken accordingly.
