Sports Desk | PNN | June 20, 2025: In a stunning upset at the FIFA Club World Cup, recently crowned UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) fell to a surprise 1-0 defeat against Brazilian champions Botafogo in their opening group stage match.
The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when Brazilian striker Igor Jesus netted the only goal of the match, assisted by Venezuelan playmaker Jefferson Savarino. Despite boasting a star-studded lineup featuring Desire Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Vitinha, PSG struggled to break through Botafogo’s disciplined defense and failed to create meaningful scoring chances.
Known for dominating possession, PSG were surprised by Botafogo’s tactical approach. Instead of engaging in a midfield battle, the Brazilian side chose a defensive structure with quick counterattacks. Botafogo had just 25% possession, yet managed four shots on target—one of which found the net. PSG, despite having superior ball control, registered only two shots on target throughout the game.
Set pieces presented the French side with opportunities, earning 10 corner kicks. However, Botafogo's defensive duo—6'6" Jair Cunha (Brazil) and 6'4" Alexsandro Barbosa (Argentina)—dominated aerial duels. Former Napoli and Everton midfielder Allan, stationed as the defensive anchor, was pivotal in shielding the backline, effectively cutting off PSG’s build-up play.
This loss marks a sobering start to PSG’s Club World Cup campaign and underscores the unpredictability of international club competitions, where tactical discipline and team unity can outperform star power. Botafogo’s tactical masterclass will surely inspire other underdogs in the tournament.
